90th Anniversary of the first Baseball Broadcast

August 5, 2011 Off By Eric O'Brien

It’s worth noting that today – August 5, 2011 – is the 90th Anniversary of the world’s first live play-by-play broadcast of a baseball game over KDKA as Harold Arlin watched the game at Forbes Field. Arlin apparently spoke through a converted telephone from a box seat just behind home plate. Today the North Hills Amateur Radio Club is celebrating this historic broadcast over special station K3D through 7:00 a.m. tomorrow from the Saxonburg Museum in Roebling Park – one of the original KDKA transmitter sites. By the way, the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies that day 8-5.
