WYTV gets power increase approved
Youngstown: A reader over at "The Mighty Blog of Fun" Ohio Media Watch has reported there that the FCC has approved a power increase for ABC affiliate WYTV DT 36 (33-1) from 50kw to 1,000kw. The station has always had less power than both WKBN and WFMJ in the valley going back to its former analog signal which did not even broadcast in stereo. WYTV also carries "MyYTV" 33-2 which is a "MyTV" affiliate as well as "My Valley Weather" on 33-3. A power increase will certainly be a plus for the station but financial problems with New Vision (who recently filed for bankruptsy) could prevent the increase from happening. Hopefully, it will not be an issue and the increase can go on as planned if the station is to remain competitive.Readers’ Forum
I would think Parkin Broadcasting is still responsible for power increases n’at, since they do own the station and NVT simply runs it for Parkin. I hope they do increase the power, although I can get it just fine at my house it would give WYTV an edge over the other stations, particulary WFMJ which has remained the market leader despite the combined operations of WYTV & WKBN. Next up, I wonder if MyYTV joins sister station WYFX and broadcasts in HD. They can do that AND keep MyValleyWeather.com on 33.3, some of the ABC O&O’s are broadcasting three subchannels with two in HD. WKBN should launch a third channel and air additional sports programming, or maybe ThisTV. NVT has done an excellent job so far, why let a bankruptcy affect them?

Just because ABC is doing it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. If you’d actually seen the PQ on LiveWell HD, you’d agree that it’s a bad idea.

Good point with ABC. Most of their O&O’s that were on VHF went back to their old analog position in digital, including WPVI in Philadelphia, which for a station in a market it’s size (not to mention one of ABC’s strongest O&O’s) went back to channel 6 for digital. I thought the low VHF band (channels 2-6) had too many problems to even consider using those channels, yet a network O&O in the nation’s fourth largest market did just that. 7-13 aren’t much better but I guess are useable.
