WOGI moving to 104.3

Pittsburgh:

WOGI-FM (98.3) is making a move up the dial to 104.3 FM for what the Froggy website calls "50,000 watts of fun!" The move will take place September 1 with no other changes occurring. The people remain the same and the simulcasts on 94.9 FM (WOGG) and 103.5 FM (WOGH) will also remain.

98.3 FM used to be licensed to Charleroi and best known as WESA and WZKL before being purchased by Forever/Keymarket in 2000 and moved to Duquesne PA in 2002. This signal has always been a "Class A" and therefore is licenced to a smaller community. The ERP is 3500 watts. No word on the plan for this signal.

104.3 FM is currently WOGF and was once WELA licenced to East Liverpool, Ohio. The license was recently moved to Moon Township, PA and is a 13,000 watt class B.

Tip of the hat to Brian for tipping us to this story.

I’m confused…so Froggy 104.3 is becoming Froggy 104.3?

Can you say 98.3 Klove. Nobody is going to do anything successful with that signal in this market.

I wonder it the Pitt could buy the 98.3 signal for WPTS. It would be a great signal for a college station.

Cott – No. The call letters of WOGI are apparently moving over to 104.3 which, as of now, is WOGF. The format and all of the programming you hear will remain the same. But 98.3 will, apparently, not air the Froggy programming anymore.

JR – I’m sure no college station would be interested in paying dearly for another signal. While I agree that it would be a vast improvement, I’m not sure that it would be in the budget.

It would be a fine signal for an urban station, and WAMO is disappearing soon.

What we could use in this town is a well programmed classic rock station. I’ve been getting WBIG 100.3 fron Washington DC by skip this week and it makes me miss Channel 97.

Combined, all for 4 frequencies put out 37,650 watts. Where does 50,000 watts come from?

We could also use an old-school alternative rock station – a full-time version of 105.9’s “Prehistoric X”.

Mark, I believe that what Froggy is trying to portray with “50,000 watts” is the fact(?) that 104.3’s ERP between the actual power and antenna tower height is 50kw. Whether or not that’s fact, I don’t know, it’s just what their website said.
Eric O'Brien - August 27, 2009 at 1:12 pm

I agree with Eric. Froggy is promoting the 50,000 watts ERP, even though that’s not the actual power output. As for 98.3 formats, an old-school alternative-rock station would get the same ratings that WXXP had, which is to say, not much.

Maybe K-Love can put yet another translator on 98.3. Or maybe CBS could buy the frequency and put KDKA AM on it so their top of the hour ID could be even longer.

K-Love come on! are you serious? why would there be 3 Christian stations on FM in Pittsburgh? why would a college spend tuition money on 98.3 when a college station are not even in the rating, the only college station i know thats in the ratings in WHUR 96.3 Washington, DC(R&B and Classic Soul). Why would you need another rock station it is a more white city but still you have to be open minded and think why would there be 3 or 4 rock stations in pittsburgh? you know how the pittsburgh radio market would look? you said K-love(christian) and 101.5 and future 106.7 (3 of the same)or 98.3 Being rock just as 105.9 and 102.5. theres plenty of rock and country hd sub stations. if you have the same boring stations that is not reaching a diverse area then alot of people will be moving to bigger cities. only 2 or 3 formats are missing. Urban AC(R&B and Classic Soul), Urban(Hip&Hop, rap & R&B), Smooth Jazz(But major cities are dropping the smooth jazz format). So losing the only urban station in pittsburgh is a big lost. 98.3 will be an Urban Station..It does add up..4 froggy stations and the Pittsburgh 98.3 will be sold or format change. and WAMO will be off the air in September. 98.3 Format change in September or sell..RADIO ONE! PITTSBURGH NEEDS YOUR HELP lol

KDKA FM is not a bad idea for 98.3 Especially since the AM signal is so crappy these days. I can barely get KDKA-AM where I live in West Mifflin. It’s also real bad on my Alpine tuner in the car.
JR - August 28, 2009 at 1:38 pm

CBS is at the FCC limit and won’t be acquiring 98.3 (in fact, they have expressed a desire to divest their FM stations here). An urban format would make sense given 98.3’s signal, but if WAMO couldn’t make it, how could a Class A? Radio One doesn’t have the money. K-Love does. My money’s on them.
Seeing Eye - August 30, 2009 at 12:54 am

O ok. But that is sad. 3 Christian stations “Seeing Eye” wow. GOD bless pittsburgh
FM - September 01, 2009 at 10:51 am

That’s just fine. A bit of twist in the urban station arrangement. Fine signal and a hip radio station. Why not?
