WANB operating from 1210

Pittsburgh:

Broadcast Communications began broadcasting WANB-AM (Waynesburg) on 1210 today, after nearly 50 years on 1580 AM. The move was made to have a better coverage area which is easier to achieve the lower you go on the AM dial. For now, WANB is still heard on 103.1 FM, now known as WKVE and will continue to be heard on a translater FM station at 105.1 FM.

BCI will very soon be ready to operate WKVE (103.1) with its new Mt. Pleasant city of license.

About a week or so ago I was picking up WANB on 104.1 not 105.1 from my house in West Mifflin using a outdoor antenna and a rotor. It was a week signal but it was there.

Traveled to Uniontown today and the 1210 signal was coming in loud and clear well up into the mountains. Much better coverage than the old spot at 1580. Also, 105.1 was coming in very clear up in the mountains. Not to get too off topic, but the 98.5 in and around the North Hills can NOT be the K-Love signal from Confluence. That signal begins to fade out well before Pittsburgh. My car radio actually stops on 98.5 in Wexford, Gibsonia, and the McKnight Road area. So unless they have a really bizarre coverage pattern, the 98.5 translator is on in Shaler.

No. I am pretty sure that the coverage pattern out of Confluence must be bizarre. The 98.5 repeater in Glenshaw was turned off several years ago in order to accommodate 98.3 when it moved to the Crown tower on the North Side. If it is operating, it is an illegal operation as I posted some months ago.

The 98.5 signal you hear IS Confluence and is not heard consistently throughout the areas you mention. It’s just a lucky signal pattern for them as shown here… http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat..

I was in Waynesburg on Sept 22, 2010. I have family in Greene and Washington Counties. Good luck with the massive construction on High Street. I tuned in 1580—uh-oh; silence. I did not know the station went to 1210. CONGRATULATIONS! My first radio job was at WANB from 1965-1969 when Jim Pattison owned it. Jim bought the station after it had been dark for about a year.
Do you still have the old RCA model 77 console?
It was built like a tank, and weighed a ton. Back in the day, we would get clobbered by WPGC, a 10,000 watt flame thrower in Morningside, Md at about an hour before sign-off. There were times I could hear it in the on-air monitor during dead air! I have very fond memories of WANB. I loved it; I was paid $1.25/hr.
Best wishes;
Jim Pollock, Class of 1969 Waynesburg College.

This station rocks… I work in Morgantown and live in Fairmont, WV.. No problem with the signal. I have told all my friends who loved the old DVE...since your platform is very simular.. Old rock and new rock. So hard to find that these days. Love Rush..Rolling Stones, Skynard and the like. Thanks Look forward to many years of enjoyment.
