WKVE operations temporary; may return with next storm

Pittsburgh:

For those who heard WKVE Mt Pleasant (103.1) operating over the weekend may be surprised to learn that the move was only temporary. Station owner, Bob Stevens of Broadcast Communications, Inc., made the decision to put the station on the air after most of the Waynesburg area lost power due to the snow storm. "I made the decision to put the Mt. Pleasant site on because it still covers Greene and Fayette Counties and we could broadcast emergency information for those regions," Stevens said.

The Mt. Pleasant station was back off the air this morning despite the fact that power has not returned to WANB's tower. Stevens added, "We may turn the Mt. Pleasant site on again depending on the outcome of the predicted snow storm due in on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday."

Stevens went on to say that he expects to turn the new WKVE on by late February or the beginning of March. "The first indication listeners will have is when we start running announcements for WANB listeners to tune their FM dials to 105.1 and stay tuned for a new format on 103.1 coming soon," he said. And by soon, Stevens means a few weeks.

IT SHOULD BE A “FCC” REQUIREMENT FOR ALL BROADCAST STATIONS TO HAVE A MANDATORY BACK UP POWER SOURCE. THIS COULD BE GASOLINE/DIESEL/PROPANE GENERATORS, WINDMILL, OR EVEN SOLAR.
AS TO BCI RUNNING THE INFORMATION ABOUT THE STORM. IT WAS ALL OUTDATED WHEN I TUNED IN ON SUNDAY. THERE IS NOTHING THAT SOUNDS SO STUPID AS “THE SNOW WILL BE LEAVING THE AREA & IN A FEW DAYS WE WILL BE BACK TO NORMAL” WHEN IN FACT THE SNOW HAD ALREADY STOPPED HERE IN WESTERN GREENE COUNTY BY 16:30 ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON. I HAVE A RECORDING OF THE LOOP AND WILL BE SENDING IT TO THE “FCC”. THIS IS ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF BCI OWNER NOTSERVING THE COMMUNITY” DURING AN EMERGENCY. I WORKED AND STAYED AT WANB-FM 103.1/AM 1580 FOR OVER “100 HOURS” WHEN THE LAST STORM HIT BACK ON VALENTINE’S DAY WEEKEND IN 2003. I & DOUGLAS A. “THE GREASER” WILSON, RAN THE STATION “LIVE” UNTIL WE DID EXPERIENCE A MINOR POWER OUTAGE. IT IS AMAZING HOW THINGS HAVE HANGED IN 7 YEARS FOR THE WORST.

I’ve been listening to WKVE’s Mt Pleasant broadcast for the last week now. I’ve been an exclusive XM and MP3 listener for the last five years, driven away from broadcast FM by Clearchannel and it’s universal 100 song playlist…but I bought a new car this week and was scanning to set the radio presets and found KVE.

Amazing! The music is unbelievably good! My kudos go to whoever’s doing the programming for this station. I certainly hope it continues to transmit from Mt Pleasant, so I can continue to receive it in Pittsburgh.
