So Erie has a Jazz station but Pittsburgh’s flips to all news? Say it ain’t so. Better hope local foundations don’t look to make Mercyhurst an offer it can’t refuse.

Nope WQLN 91.3 has the NPR affiliation with Morning Edition and an afternoon news talk block from 3-9pm. It’s good to have an alternate choice even for those who lost their Music of Your Life station a few years back.

I see from the lineup that a lot of their programming comes from WDUQ via syndication. So, ultimately it appears that it might not even be local foundations, but rather Pittsburgh area foundations who might kill significant jazz programming in Erie as well as Pittsburgh. Hooray for efficiency… not!

If that happened, you could see either more localized programming or another Jazz network like WFMT out of Chicago which has a Classical and Jazz network. Hopefully WDUQ will keep Jazz as part of their mix. With Erie area stations, I am glad to see stations like WMCE, WERG and WYNE doing something other than the same tired songs with some stations competing with the same format. No variety there.
