WKTL to add more Summit Programming
Youngstown: According to news from Ohio Media Watch and the Vindicator, it looks like Struthers High School owned WKTL 90.7 will add more programming from Cleveland area station WAPS 91.3 The Summit. School officials at the school state that students are not getting involved with the station like they used to thanks to MP3 players and I-Pods. The student run programming will be from 8:15am - 3pm instead of 7pm. All other hours will be a simulcast of The Summit's Adult Alternative format. All weekend ethnic programming will remain in place on the 12,000 watt signal in the Mahoning Valley.Readers’ Forum
Hmmm…. a 12KW signal in Y-town and the “students aren’t getting involved”? – Maybe its time the school board cut its losses, saves its taxpayers some money and spin the station off to a non-profit group whose members “DO get involved”.

It wouldn’t surprise me if that happens down the road. Who knows, it could go right to those who own The Summit & simulcast full time.

After checking out The Summit – I found out that its owned by the Akron School board and I see its history goes way way back. That the station is more than a “school radio station” that its become more of a community station employing a pretty decent AAA format and following from what I see are very professional standards. Perhaps the school board that owns WKTL can hire someone to do the same with its property. I know the Y-town market is more than packed with a number of media outlets, but a small WAPS styled community station could prove to be a shot in the arm to not only Struthers, OH – but the Y-town metro as well. Just my 2 cents.
