WSOM 600 goes news talk

Youngstown:

Recent news of 1390 WNIO flipping from nostalgia to sports talk would not have been such a big deal since listeners of the "Great American Songbook" would still have WSOM 600 to go to. Well, that is not the case as WSOM has also flipped from nostalgia to talk and is now known as "News Talk 600 WSOM". This now leaves Youngstown without any nostalgia based formats and appears to have a mostly syndicated lineup including Michael Savage and Glenn Beck. The market with stations in both Ohio and Pennsylvania already has WKBN 570, WPIC 790, WGFT 1330 and WASN 1500. Update: WSOM was playing standards overnight Monday into Tuesday thought this will probably change once they find an overnight talk show to fill the overnight hours. Don't forget that nearby WKTX 830 does play some standards mixed in with their ethnic programming. Could they or someone else fill the void? Stay tuned.

Just what the Mahoning Vallley needs … another hate-mongering radio station.

Cleveland does not have a commercial standar station either. Does Kenston High Schools 91.5 make it to Y town?

I doubt 91.5 makes it there due to a religious station at 91.7 in the market. I know WKTX 830 covers the area and plays some standards with ethnic programming. During the day, you may also try to pull in WJAS 1320 from Pittsburgh or CFZM Zoomer Radio 740 from Toronto. Of course, there are numerous internet streams like “Martini in the Morning” playing those swinging sounds.

the problem is that there is only room for 1 nostalgia station. of wsom had waited they could have had the audience AND the revenue.
it was probably some sort of retaliation for 1390 flipping…......probably won’t matter in the long run.you can’t hear 600 in youngstown except for daytime.

I have picked up AM 740 as far west as Akron. But it still doesn’t justify changing from the only remaining local adult standards station to another of the area’s 37 hate-mongering so-called NewsTalk stations.

I often listened to both stations online, though you can hear the former network of WSOM on other streams. I still prefered WNIO’s music mix for the format better than most. I feel bad for older listeners who do not have internet and are not as adaptable to finding the same music online as the younger generation is. This happened in Erie in 2007 and listeners went to some Canadian stations as well as WMCE “88.5 Jazz FM” when they flipped to jazz in early 2009.

WKTX AM 830 even though daytime only has the strongest signal in Trumbull Co.

Promos on the station say that Jon Grayson’s overnight show will be on WSOM in the near future. Unsure as to when it starts, which explains the standards mix. (Of course, both overnight gabfests Coast to Coast and Phil Hendrie are on WKBN, so this makes sense.)

WSOM and WNIO bucked the trend of standards stations all over the country; in fact, Youngstown was probably the last major city in the U.S. to have two standards stations on the air at the same time. This even as both stations were virtually all-automated.

Several adult standard stations have switched formats just in the 4 or 5 years since I started to embrace the format. Like Altoona, Erie, Punxsutawney, and now Youngstown. Who’s next? WBBD (Wheeling)? WJAS? WCRO (Which is owned by the Johnstown school district)? WISR (Butler)? When will it end?
