WSTV off air; apparently dark
West Virginia: WTRF-TV's (7) website is reporting that WSTV-AM (1340) Steubenville is no longer on the air. Radio station management confirmed that the station went black earlier today. 1340 first signed on in 1940. The station had recently become an ESPN affiliate. Channel 7 reporter Dave Elias notes that the stationWSTV has apparently been at odds with the supposed owner of the property where the transmitter sits on Altamont Hill. The site is that of WTOV-TV's (9) studios and transmitter site. Also broadcasting from that site is WOGH-FM (103.5). Both 103.5 and Channel 9 have carried the WSTV callsigns at one time or another. 103.5 and 1340 remain sister stations under the Keymarket ownership while WTOV-TV is owned by Cox. More as we hear it.Readers’ Forum
1340 seems to be kind of a cursed frequency around this region. Oil City’s 1340 (WOYL) went dark a couple of a years ago.

Another area station that was on 1340 and went off the air was the old Grove City College station WSAJ. The college relinquished their AM license years ago and is now on the air on the FM band with the same callsign.

How about a 1340 that never happened? Here in MA, an applicant for 1340 in Westfield planned to use the tower vacated by a local station which changed freq and xmtr site. A New York City 1330 station (108 miles) with 10 kW D and 5 kW N challenged and defeated the application.

WSAJ was only 100W with a wire antenna on thje roof of a building and on the hir just a few hours a week. I know a few people who made an offer to buy that station and the college wasn’t interested in selling it, they just turned in the license.
Bill.. I would assume that 1340 license proposed to use the old tower of 1570kHz?
