Spaghetti: Coming to a breakfast near you!

Pittsburgh:

Celebrating 25 years as an event this year is the KDKA Radio Spaghetti Breakfast. John Cigna, who started the event in 1983, will be on hand for the occasion with the current morning team of Larry Richert and John Shumway. The rest of the airstaff is expected to be there as is former overnight host, Bob Logue.

The event will be held in Market Square from 5:00 - 9:00 AM on Friday, September 19. Volunteers from the American Heart Association and DelGrosso foods are expecting to serve a recordbreaking 6000 meals this year with the remaining supplies going to local food banks. The event is free and open to the public.

If anyone has an e-mail for John Cigna, please send it along to me. I always thought the spaghetti breakfast was the brainchild of John’s and my mutual friend, Johnny Costanzo, who owned the restaurant where he had the shindig, on 4th Avenue downtown (I’m told it’s now an unemployment office!). John Costanzo had a lady working for him named Evelyn, who made the BEST sauce I’‘ve ever tasted. I used to buy it by the gallon. When I was with Magic 97, I used to have Cigna, Sean McDowell, Donnie Iris, Paulsen and Krenn, Norman Nardini and others get together at Point Park College to judge (or perform at) our “Hot Legs” Contests. They benefitted diabetes research (John Costanzo suffers from that affliction). That was probably the first time that such a diverse bunch of radio station personnel, got together for a common cause (I know I NEVER saw them at AFTRA union meetings!) I may be wrong in my attreibution of this concept..But I’ve got spaghetti on the burner, right now, at midnight on an early Saturday! My regards to Larry Richert, as well, if you know him.
