Mehno: Frattare's retirement "fishy"

Pittsburgh:

Beaver County Times Sports Correspondent John Mehno thinks the retirement of Pirates announcer Lanny Frattare is fishy. In fact he thinks the story, "smells as fishy as the Oyster House on a Friday in Lent." Frattare is 60 and appears to be in good health but has no plans for what he'll do during the 2009 season. Several friends and co-workers didn't see it coming. Mehno seems to think that Frattare could have up and made the decision to retire, but wouldn't be surprised if he was encouraged.

I remember, not too long ago, when Dusty Baker and the Cubs all but blamed their announcers for their own ineptitude. Yep, Chip Carey and Steve Stone were, apparently, the biggest culprits for 100 years of less than sterling baseball. Maybe the Bucs are on the same wavelength. Actually, the team may have been better if Lanny had been manager. I hope Lanny hooks on with an actual Major League team. He deserves to announce for a team that wins on occasion. In true Pirate fashion, I’m sure Lanny’s replacement will been some guy who’s currently announcing at grade school kickball games and will work for next to nothing. I’ve been a baseball fan for 35 years, and cannot wait until Pittsburgh gets a Major League team again.

Maybe Lanny got the boot like Bob Prince did way back when but they agreed it would look better if he said he was retiring…..
