Cameraman dies on the job

Well-known Washington County cameraman Tommy Sypula passed away Sunday at the age of 60. Sypula suffered an apparent heart attack after pulling over to film a fatal collision on I-79 in North Strabane Township. He often provided news and photos for the Washington Observer-Reporter and video for Pittsburgh TV stations. He is remembered as a man who had a passion for his work and who would greet police on the scene with a warm smile and handshake – even at the worst of times. He also spent 20 years producing football films for Washington High School and Canon-McMillan High School.

Sypula had only recently returned to work after taking leave following the unexpected November death of his oldest son. He also survived a recent cancer battle.

Funeral arrangements are not complete.
