Happy Birthday WQED-FM

January 25, 2013 Off By Eric O'Brien

40 years ago today, WQED-FM began playing classical music to Pittsburgh. It became the city’s second public radio station and the first to permanently take up residence at 89.3. (WDUQ spent the first six months of its operation at 89.3 in 1949.)

From 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. today, the station will celebrate its birthday on the air with special programming devoted to its history and community comments. Then on Saturday evening, sister station WQED-TV will devote a 3-hour block (8:00 – 11:00 p.m.) to the FM with special performances and guests. #PG
