In memory: Beano Cook

October 11, 2012 Off By Eric O'Brien

Local radio announcers and the college football community are mourning the loss of Carroll H. “Beano” Cook this afternoon. Cook passed away Wednesday night after a brief illness at age 81. He was a 1954 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he later became Sports Information Director. Cook was a frequent sports commentator on WTAE-TV in the 1980s as well as appearances on local radio. More recently he was a commentator on ESPN.

Born in Boston in 1931, Cook’s family moved to Pittsburgh when he was 7. A new neighbor started calling him “Beano” in reference to “Beantown”, Boston’s nickname.

Cook’s final blog posting was October 1.
