The Saturday Light Brigade’s parent operation, SLB Radio Productions and WQED Multimedia have teamed up to bring children an online-only station called “iQ Kids Radio”. “iQ smartmedia is an educational initiative by WQED providing resources for children as well as educators and caregivers. The broadcast is expected to launch in 2013 and will be on the air all day on Saturdays with the hope of increasing programming to 24/7 with on-demand and podcasts available.

SLB will develop program content based on the formula used for the Saturday Light Brigade which is heard Saturdays from 6:00 a.m. – 12 Noon on WRCT-FM (88.3) and other regional public and college stations. There will also be programming from PBS and stuff made by children.

The overall goal is to create a format to which parents and children can listen together. “Part of this includes programming that’s free of strong commercial branding,” SLB’s Larry Berger told the Post-Gazette.

Interested listeners can go to iQkidsradio.org for progress reports and connect with the station before the launch next year.
