According to WMCE Program Director Michael Leal, the simulcast of “88.5 Jazz FM” on the Erie city translator at 104.9 (W285AI) will soon come to an end. The translator (which was actually owned by legendary broadcaster Bill Shannon) will be sold or leased to Citadel broadcasting in order to put “ESPN 1260 The Score” (WRIE) on the FM dial with a simulcast. The station had been using the translator for several years when Bill was at WMCE as a way to help with city grade coverage of 88.5. Since then, WMCE has become more powerful at 750 watts with better coverage in the City of Erie. According to Leal, the station will make announcements informing listeners to tune to 88.5 from 104.9 before the simulcast ends sometime in February. The station also streams online at www.erieradio.com. (Note: Tom Lavery is an employee of WMCE / Mercyhurst College.)
