Lesson: Make sure your EAS passwords are reset

You’ve heard about the recent hoaxes. KRTV-TV in Great Falls, Montana and WNMU-TV in Marquette, Wisconsin fell victim to the hackers who were able to access the Emergency Alert System equipment to alert viewers, “Civil authorities in your area have reported that the bodies of the dead are rising from their graves and attacking the living.”  The hoax aired on these and perhaps other stations on February 11. It’s likely that the stations didn’t change the default log-in and password on their EAS equipment. Patrick Cloonan checked with local radio and TV companies to find that most, if not all are as prepared against such skullduggery. Although one local co-manager warns, “It’s only as good as the last outbreak sometimes.”
