February 2006

[important]To read in chronological order, start at the bottom and work your way up.[/important]

Thank you for putting me in the “Where are they Now?” listings…A New Jersey TV viewer called to inform me, they’d done a search and found out more about me here…I was hired as the 5pm coanchor and medical beat reporter at WSAZ in 1998. In 2000, I was hired to anchor the noon and 5pm newscasts at News 12 New Jersey in Edison. In 2001, I launched my own weekend talk show called “Defying Age.” In 2005, I was promoted to solo anchor the 5pm, 7:30pm, 9pm, and 10pm newscasts… Now, I’m re-launching my talk show as “Spotlight New Jersey” to showcase all the wonderful people– of ALL ages– we have in the Garden State and give them their 15 minutes of fame. Have a good day! Della Crews (February 25, 2006)

Eric’s Response: Dear Della, So nice to hear from you! I’m glad to know that you are doing so well. No doubt, the folks in NJ enjoy your bright smile as much as we in Pittsburgh always did. Keep up the grand work and good luck with your new program.

Eric, Do you or anyone else know what happened to WAMO’s Vicky Hill? She had a Sunday Gospel Program but I see she is gone now. Thanks, Chris (February 25, 2006)

In reference to the “bio pages” for Estha Trouw and C.S. Keys at their current station in San Diego: It was hard to find…buried deep…but here it is… http://www.fox6.com/news/biographies/. (February 20, 2006)

I lived in beaver county while going to college from june 1991 till june 1993 and always listened to a hard rock heavy metal station until one day one day they changed format to country suddenly, i can remember even the djs being surprised and i think some quiting. They always did wild things and i think had got in trouble with fcc a few times. I ran across your site and was trying to remember what name and thing were for that station was wondering if you could tell me. Just wondering what happened to the station and the guys from there were always a fun bunch. You have a very cool site brings back a lot of memories now that i have moved out of the area. (February 18, 2006)

Eric’s Response: I’m thinking that it might have been the former 106.7 FM – WWKS.

Has anyone else noticed how AWFUL the audio is for the newscast ? It sounds like it has compression artifacts the same as a low bitrate MP3 file. The sites are close enough together that a quality STL should be possible. 🙁 RJ Kanary (February 16, 2006)

Eric, Estha Trouw is at Fox 6. So is C.S. Keys, the former WPXI and KDKA weathercaster who used to go to commercials with “a pause for the cause.” They’re both listed on the station’s web site, athttp://www.fox6.com. (February 16, 2006)

Eric’s Response: Yes. I see it now. Apparently the station highlights their morning news team in their web graphics during the morning hours and their evening team during the PM hours. I never found a page dedicated to bios of the anchor team.

Hi Eric, Don’t know if you know, but Ron Keys, a WJPA Announcer in Washington, PA., passed away on February 1 at the age of 39. In addition to WJPA, “Big Ron” was a Giant Giant of a man who freelanced DJ gigs throughout Western Pennsylvania and was a big presence at WVCS-FM, California University of Pennsylvania in the mid 80’s to 1991. The WVCS Alumni Scholarship at CUP has been renamed the Ronald Keys Jr. Memorial/WVCS Alumni Scholarship. Anyone interested in more information can email me at letfam@prodigy.net Thanks, Tom Leturgey (February 16, 2006)

Do you guys remember Esta Troux(sp)? She was with wpxi years ago and I think channel 13 also? Do you know where she is now? Thanks……… Henry (February 16, 2006)

Eric’s Response: There was some indication through a Google search that Esta (Pronounced “ES-tha) Trouw went to a San Diego station, but I am not able to confirm it through the station’s website.

Paul Harvey remains on WPGB. I don’t know what the arrangement is, but WPTT declined to pick him up again, saying he didn’t fit where the station now was going. Come to think of it, Harvey now would run between Lynn Cullen and Thom Hartmann. I’m not sure he’s as conservative as he once was, but he’s probably still to the right of both Cullen and Hartmann. Pat (February 16, 2006)

Hi! You reported that there would be changes from noon to 2:00 P.M. on KDKA and that Bill O’Reily would be moved to 10:00 P.M. till midnight. This was to be effective on February 13th. So far, these changes haven’t taken place. Any word on what happened or will happen? Also, with 104.7 dropping ABC News, where is Paul Harvey now heard in our area? Thanks in advance! Jack Peters (February 15, 2006)

Eric’s Response: The story about the further changes at KDKA were in the Post-Gazette and that’s about all I can say for that. I haven’t heard anything about a “change in the changes.” I am also not sure where Paul Harvey will end up. He might still be on WPGB, although he is not listed on the website. I wonder if WPTT will pick him up again.

Has it been said which Pittsburgh affiliate is going to carry the new CW network in the fall? I currently only get channel 22 WB, and would be greatly upset if I lost access to many of my favorite shows this fall. Thanks! Brett Berquist (February 14, 2006)

Eric’s Response: The CW will be on WNPA 19 come fall.

Hello, Does anyone know what happened to the Susie Barbour talk show aired Sunday afternoons on KDKA radio from 1 to 4 pm? Currently and surprisingly it looks like the show has been replaced by some legal help talk show. I was always under the impression that KDKA wanted all local talent. I really and truly do miss hearing her voice on the radio. Sure hope she returns to the radio very very soon. Bob Black (February 13, 2006)

I grew up in the BURGH but now I now reside in a small town SW of Fort Worth TX. For years I have been listening to Porky on the internet. Two weeks ago No Porky. I searched and found your news item he has moved to WKFB.Now that he has moved are there any plans to put Porky back on the internet. I would have emailed the station but I can’t find an address. Thanks Ken Michaelson (February 12, 2006)

Eric’s Response: WKFB does not have a website or email at this time to my knowledge. Perhaps down the line.

Eric, WPGB’s recent switch from ABC News to FOX has nothing to do with the pending sale of ABC Radio. About a year ago or so, Clear Channel struck a deal with FOX to supply all of its affiliates with news updates. It’s been a rather slow transition, but that’s what’s going on. – Jim (February 10, 2006)

Do you know what Mike Pintek is doing? Linda (February 9, 2006)

Eric’s Response: There have been no reports on what he is up to.

Someone needs to point out to Mike Smalley that large numbers of Pittsburghers cared about the weather forecasts for Detroit on TV because large numbers of Pittsburghers went to Detroit for the game. The weather wasn’t a factor for the game itself because Ford Field was in a dome. But it was a major factor for Pittsburghers who traveled to Detroit for the game. After talking with friends and co-workers who went to Detroit for the Super Bowl, even though they had to watch the game in sports bars with other Steeler fans, I regret not going with them. George Erdner (February 9, 2006)

Help! I was doing a search on the web for the old Pittsburgh show “Ricki and Copper” and found your site. Do you have any idea which television station this aired on? (February 9, 2006)

Eric’s Response: WTAE-TV.

quick question eric. what will Sheridan Broadcasting do to WJJJ has anyone takin the call letters? and why would they sell 107.1 FM? are they going to buy a station to make it R&B since the signals on 107.1 are so close? and do you think they will buy 103.9 WLSW and make it a pittsburgh license? thanks vick (February 8, 2006)

Eric’s Response: I’m not sure what Sheridan is up to exactly. The purpose for which they originally had the station hasn’t been valid for quite a while now. I’m not sure if they have any plans to buy.

do you have any idea where these guys ended up? thanks. jlb (February 7, 2006)

Eric’s Response: Jimmy Roach has been on the Froggy stations as morning host for several years now. Before he was there, he had been on WDSY. Steve Hansen, after leaving the market for a couple of years, is now the program director of KDKA Radio.

There’s now a link to the 1/21/1980 newscast following the Steeler’s last Superbowl win over the then L.A. Rams. It’s from the KDKA 11 p.m. newscast (then called Eyewitness News Update) featuring Marlynn Singleton, John Sanders on sports and the Accu-Weather forecast with Ron Klink! It is complete with 1980 commercials and more. Great stuff to watch! Here’s the link: http://kdka.com/video/?id=13234@kdka.dayport.com!(February 4, 2006)

in june 2005 : Eric, I saw in your mailbag from 2/05 that someone was looking for a female DJ who was on Mix Jamz 100.7 in ’92-’93. I found this because I have been looking for Tony Q Fox (Dave Donovan). Any idea where he is? I would love to catch up with him – we were good friends when he was in Wilmington, DE (93.7 WSTW) and in Ocean City, MD (Power 99.9). We lost touch after he moved to Pittsburg in 1991 to work for Mix Jamz. Can you help? Terry from Delaware (June 14, 2005)

Answer: the woman from mix jamz was karen eden who was married to B 94’s night guy Zak Zabo and she went on to do weather on a tv station in johnstown. Tony Q Foxx worked a year at wamo before going down to daytona, then Y-100 miami, and now working under the name J.R. Jackson at infinitys “country K” 107.9 WIRK. I run into him every day, I do afternoons at the sister station WJBW 106.3…I’m DC Taylor, and also worked at the same station in ocean city with him, and in pittsburgh… terry from delaware??? is this tony q’s old girlfriend Roni??? (February 1, 2006)

Where did Kelly Olexia go? Was she fired from KDKA or did she get another job somewhere else? Jocelyn (February 1, 2006)

Eric’s Response: Kelli left KDKA in December to start a new job closer to her West Virginia home. She has left broadcasting for the time being.

Isn’t it ironic that “News Central” has gone just at the same time all of the Pittsburgh stations have gone “All Steelers, All of the Time?” 2, 4, & 11 will be sorry they have adopted this new format and I predict they’ll probably go back to “local news” in the near future. I also predict that the new fad of letting us know 7 Day forecasts for Detroit will also disappear, as soon as “football expert” Sally Wiggin lets everyone know that the Super Bowl is being played indoors and that weather won’t be a factor! Mike Smalley, West Mifflin, PA (February 1, 2006)

Hi Eric, Sam has debuted at 107.1 WGSM and it sounds very good. I think the playlist is better than Bob’s. Here is a sample of some of the songs I heard: Billy Joel-My Life, Pointer Sisters-Automatic, Black Crows-Jealous Again, Marvin Gaye-Let’s get it on, Police-Roxanne Beck-Loser. Thanks, Todd (February 1, 2006)
