New Castle area sportscaster killed
June 30, 2017WKST-AM (1200 New Castle) sports play-by-play announcer Mark Shaas was killed Thursday when stopped for construction along I-76 just over the border in Ohio. According to Channel 11, a semi failed to notice the stoppage and plowed into the car Shaas was driving. He was killed at the scene. His passenger and another driver involved were taken to a nearby hospital. Beaver County Radio reports that three semis were involved in the crash, and although no charges have been filed, police are investigating the speed and the number of hours the driver who caused the accident has been on the road.
Mark Schaas was a true professional and a great man. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who had Schaasy’s willingness to help people. I got to see him a few weeks ago and he looked like he was doing well, having overcome a stroke just two years ago.
I miss him dearly already.
