The Rock. Until August of 2000, WQKK was on 99.1 and licensed to Ebensburg. Is was a simulcast of WQWK in State College at 99.1. In the early 1980's, this station was WGLU ("Glu 92"), an AOR station. Eventually it flipped to Top 40 as "Power 92", keeping the WGLU call letters. Then, of course, the move to 99.1.

Owned by Juniata college

WQMU was originally located at 103.1 FM and until March of 2001 had a classic rock format with the moniker "The Planet". The station became a Hot AC station and is now known as "U92".

Gospel & Religious, in mono - has been for years.

"The Heart" plays many of the 80's hits and debuted in 1999. The calls were originally allocated to 104.9 FM in Hollidaysburg.

Classic Rock as "The Bus", serving State College.

"Q-94" simulcasts its signal on WBRX which is also at 94.3 FM."Q-94" premiered on November 2, 1981 as a Rock/Top 40 station (with Clarke Ingram consulting). Over the years, the format moved from straight-ahead Top 40 to AC until eventually an AOR format was adopted, which ultimately became Classic Rock. The Q-94 name was dropped briefly when the simulcast with WBRX 94.7 was added, but it has since returned. Q-94 moved its tower from Cresson Township to near Gallitzin in 1988, resulting in better coverage of Altoona.

WLTS signed on in late November, 2001 replacing the simulcast of WFGY on WFGI. The format is a soft AC known as LITE FM.

Was "Lite 95" for a while and a Country station as "The Rooster" (all with the WBRX call letters) before adopting a simulcast with WBRX 94.3 Cresson.

Station in State College, known as 3WZ

WKYE is owned by Forever Broadcasting (the Froggy folks) but nothing ribbits here. Key 95 as it is known was originally WJAC-FM and kept the beautiful music format. WKYE came about in 1983.

"The Mountain" has been in existence since 1993. Owned by Clear Channel Communications. In the early 90's this station was WKQS "Kiss FM" and had an AC format during the week with oldies on the weekends. Also once known as WJNL.

This rock station bills itself as QWK (Quick) Rock and is a simulcaster on 99.1 WQKK in Ebensburg, PA.

A repeater of "He's Alive" Radio Network.

Until 2001, this station was another "Froggy" country station. Now it is a simulcast of WUZZ-FM 105.7 in Portage. Prior to Froggy, it was WVSC-FM. VSC="Voice of Somerset County" and was an AC station. In some spots WSGY competes with WLER Butler which is also on 97.7 FM.

The main Frog for Forever Broadcasting which is based in Altoona. Many people know it as "Froggy 98" and the format was pretty similar with the orignal callsign of WFBG. WFBG-FM was Beautiful Music for many years, usually #2 in the market behind WFBG (AM), before switching to Froggy.

Forever Broadcasting reintroduced the 98.7 signal on November 25, 2001 with the Smooth Jazz format. The programming comes from Jones Radio Networks. 98.7 used to be WZRZ, then it was WLTS-FM. The transmitter was near Lock Haven. It had been silent for a year or more before the arrival of WOJZ in November, 2001. A new tranmitter was installed, a new tower was built north of Bellefonte and the calls were changed to WOJZ. The station became the oldies outlet for State College and is now known as WOWEE 98.7.

Although now known as "Power 99", WGLU has always been a CHR station. Originally known as Power 92, August of 2000 brought a change for Power as it went from 92.1 to 99.1. Prior to that it was WQKK - a simulcast of WQWK. Before that the station was home to WIYQ and had satellite feeds of oldies and country. As WIYQ, it was also the home of the "Big Gene Nighthawk Show" overnights along the Allegheny Mountain Radio Network (which also included WTRN-AM and WGMR-FM in Tyrone).

WPRR is sister of WVAM-AM. Before going Top 40 around 1980, was "Country FM 100", and then "The Rock" with an AOR format, both under the call letters WVAM-FM. It is now known as Power 100, WPRR.

"The Revolution" is another simulcaster giving Altoona listeners their outlet on 101.3. This was Country for many years before going Alternative. WGMR meant Good Mountain Radio. Tower is on Bald Eagle Mountain giving excellent coverage of State College.

This station's current format gives it the name of "Kool 101.7" and plays oldies. Before that it was "Star 101.7" and had a mix of soft hits from decades past. The station wass much like the last incarnation of WGAY-FM in Washington, D.C. Originally on the air as WYSN (Sunny 101.7) playing adult standards. The WYSN calls and format are now on 1330 AM.

Forever Broadcasting's Happy Valley CHR outlet.

WLAK is a simulcast of WMRF 95.9 FM in Lewistown, PA. The station was originally a non-simulcaster and given the name "Lake" presumably due to the proximity of Raystown Lake. Sometimes the frequency competes in places with WOGH in Steubenville.

One of the first LPFMs to go on the air in 2003. The station is operated by Godstock Ministries Inc and is a full-time Christian music station.

Another Forever station that hasn't gone to the Frogs, but is known as "Wally (spelled WALY) 104". It was WHGM for many years, co-owned with WOPC-TV 38 Altoona (now WATM-TV 23), running mono programs from the "Kaleidoscope" service, which appeared to be airchecks of broadcasting-school students.

The station known as "Cool Country 104.3," also features a special bluegrass show on the weekends.

Another Forever station, the format is very similar to WDVE in Pittsburgh. Much of the format history is similar as well. The station was WMXV "Mix 104.9" and WHPA before that with AC Format. WMAJ was next as "Majic 104.9." The station changed the format to rock and is now known as WRKY "Rocky 104.9 - Rock that Really Rocks!" (WRKY was the callsign for 103.5 FM in Steubenville, OH until 2001.)

"Wuzz 105." WFJY was on prior to WUZZ and was another Froggy. WZGO (Z-105.7) also aired here playing the same satellite oldies that WIYQ picked up before becoming WQWK. In 1993, the station was "Kix Country" WKXU.

"The Buzz"

Sometimes able to be picked up in Pittsburgh, "Lucky 106.3" is a sister to 1160 WCCS, WDAD and WQMU under Renda Broadcasting of Pittsburgh.

Another Forever Broadcasting simulcast out of Altoona.

Up until September 17, 2000, the this was WWCW and home to a country format. The station switched to an Adult Rock format on that date with the name "B-Rock".

The station was once known as "Wink," but dropped the "Wink 108" moniker and went Oldies as "Cool 107.9". In 2002, the station decided to "flip temperatures and become "Hot 107.9" and play rythmic CHR.

AM

Long known as WJAC-AM, (originally at 1400 on the dial, donated to St. Francis College in Loretto when they moved to 850). WODZ took over the WJAC callsign and made room for "Oldiez Radio". The station is now known as "WILLIE" and features a classic country format.

Sister of 93.5 WHPA

Another Forever "Oldiez" station, also simulcasting WLYE and its classic country format.

They boast 12 newscasts a day, weather at least 5 times an hour and up-to-date weather and emergency information when needed.

Was a great-sounding AM Top 40 station in the early to mid-1980's, programmed by Steve Austin, formerly of WFBG (aka Greg Banks of WKYE and WMTZ). WQRO is now dark (probably for good) and WQHG-FM 106.3 is in their former studios.

A former Classic Country station, this Forever Broadcasting station is now news/talk.

Not only does this full service AC station provite music, but it carries Pirate Baseball and Indiana County high school events.

At one time WCRO was the top CHR station on the air. Once the home of the Johnstown Johnnies baseball. When this was a top 40 station, Mike Farrow was on in the morning and Jack Michaels (now at WKYE) took the afternoons. WCRO is now owned by the Greater Johnstown School District and programs the "Music Of Your Life."

One of the few stations in Altoona not owned or even touched by Forever Broadcasting.

Sister station to "The Buzz" WUBZ.

WFBG is the home station for the Altoona Curve baseball team and is owned by Forever. (Are you surprised?) This was THE Top 40 station from the 1970's until the end of the 1980's, most of it under the sure hand of PD Tony Booth. Known as "The Mighty 1290" and "The Big AM 1290," WFBG racked up 30+ Arbitron shares until FM stations (Q-94, WPRR) began to encroach on its dominance. Even so, WFBG may have been the last AM Top 40 station in the nation, finally switching in 1988 or 1989. Recently WFBG ran a satellite Adult Standards format, but is now a full service news/talk station known as "Big News, Big Talk - The Big 1290."

WBFD has been an oldies station under two callsigns. WOOX was the callsign for a period of time up to October 1, 2000 when WBFD "returned" to 1310. WBFD was the original callsign.

Being sister to WSRA, WYSN became the home of "Sunny" when WSRA switched to a new format. This Dame Broadcasting outlet is now news/talk

Owned by the Allegheny Mountain Network, this legendary station was once a top 40 and now services Tyrone with news and soft AC. It also carries Pittsburgh Pirates, Altoona Curve baseball and local sports.

This station the the "Cove" was once a country outlet, then a sister of the former WHPA in Hollidaysburg with a standards format. It was purchased by the Allegheny Mountain Network in the 90s and was then classic country. With format changes in Altoona, WKMC picked up the "Music Of Your Life" standards format that was dropped by WFBG-AM.

This was the original frequency for WJAC, which donated the station to St. Francis College when WJAC moved to 850, at which time 1400 became WWSF. In the late 1970's, Pittsburgh announcer Ed Sherlock (and partners) bought WWSF, changing it to WAMQ, the first full-time AM signal in the Mainline area ("Day and Night Radio"). They would later put WBXQ 94.3 Cresson on the air as well, and WAMQ eventually went to a partial simulcast of WBXQ. Eventually both stations were sold. 1400 was WEBG until 2001 when the station became a mix of talk and sports with the likes of The Greaseman, Don and Mike and G. Gordon Liddy. The station went dark in August, 2003.

WVAM's sports format includes being a Pirates affiliate. This WPRR sister has been a news/talk and country formatted station in the past.

WDAD has had other formats in the past but is now Oldies. Sister to WQMU.

Was a big Top 40 station at one time as "14 MAJ", then evolved to AC and later to a News/Talk. It's now all sports as ESPN radio.

WFJY was simulcasting 105.7 FM from the time it was WZGO radio. Then the station went dark. It was WRML (once a big Top 40 station in the area), was "Coal Power Country" in the early 1980's, then AC, then took the call letters WWML, then WZGO as "Z-Gold", an Oldies station. This station is now gone as an application to move to Wilkinsburg (!) using 250 watts at 660 on the dial has been approved.

A Pittsburgh Pirate affiliate, this station was WJNL-AM. Its sister WKQS-FM was soon simulcasted on 1490 until it became WNTJ. The callsign stations for "News/Talk Johnstown". Owned by Clear Channel.

Another sister of 93.5 WHPA and 950 WNCC. Owned by Vernal Enterprises.

For a period of time, 1600 was WBFD while 1310 was WOOX. On October 1, 2000, WBFD returned to 1310 and at 7 PM 1600 went dark. at 5 AM the next day, the station signed back on with mostly religious programming. The callsign is WHJB which was originally parked at 620 AM in Greensburg, PA.

TV

Although licensed to nearby Clearfield, WPSX is Penn State's television station. The PBS affiliate is where "The Pennsylvania Game," a program for Pennsylvania PBS stations.

WJAC has been "Serving the Alleghenies since 1949. Channel 6 has indeed had a long history and can also be picked up on 87.7 FM. Actually this is nothing new. Many Channel 6 stations can be received on 87.7 because of the proximity of the two frequencies. The station was purchased by Cox Enterprises at the same time Steubenville's WTOV-TV was purchased making them sisters with Pittsburgh's WPXI-TV. All three are NBC affiliates.

It is a guess that WCP stands for "West Central Pennsylvania". WWCP has only been on the air since 1986 and has held an affiliation with Fox ever since.

Consistently ranked as one of the top 2 stations in the market (WJAC being the other) WTAJ was orignally WFBG-TV. WTAJ might stand for Television for Altoona/Johnstown.

WATM is WWCP's sister station and was once a simulcast of the Fox Network. However, this current TV station was once a weak signaled ABC affiliate on Channel 38 as WOPC. In the 80's the station was moved to Channel 23 and went dark. WWPC was the simulcasting signal of WWCP from 1986 to 1989 when WATM was brought on with the ABC Network. In the period where ABC wasn't affiliated with an area station, WTAE in Pittsburgh covered the Western part of the market while Harrisburg's WHTM took care of the east.

WKBS is a simulcast of WPCB Channel 40 from Greensburg.
