WQED to air Sept. 11 special

August 19, 2011 Off By Eric O'Brien

WQED-TV’s (13) Michael Bartley will be commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with a special documentary. “Return to Shanksville” will focus on the small Pennsylvania town 80 miles from Pittsburgh where United Flight 93 crashed. Bartley’s documentary will feature the family members of those who perished as well as first-responders involved on that tragic day. It will also follow the construction of the permanent memorial honoring the 40 passengers and crew aboard that fateful flight. (The memorial is set to be dedicated on September 10 and the ceremony will be attended by President Obama.)

“As I interviewed the people involved – family and first responders – I saw how deeply events of that day affected Shanksville,” Bartley said in a press release. Everyone has a memory and they were willing to share it, especially the people of Shanksville, who are so intricately involved in being the caretakers of what they call this scared (sic) burial ground.”

The program is set to air on WQED on Thursday, September 8 at 8:00 p.m. Bartley will be sharing his thoughts online and invites the audience to contribute stories at www.wqed.org/returntoshanksville/blog.
