Things people have noticed
November 6, 2025Here are some things observant people have noticed over the last week or so.
The recent national bloodbath at SkyDance Media>Paramount>CBS>KDKA-TV appears, at least locally, to have targeted women. Without study of who has been let go nationally, locally it seems that on-air women have been the target of the layoffs. Including Kym Gable (who was a freelance anchor) and Lindsay Ward who were both let go in August, the recent layoffs of Katie O’Malley, Kelly Dzanaj, and Lisa Smith certainly make it seem to be pointed toward women. But not knowing who was let go behind the scenes locally, and again who was released nationally, it’s hard to make an accurate accusation. PBRTV suggests since KDKA-TV just recently promoted a woman into the news director role, it’s not about gender as much as it is unfortunate coincidence. Again, if we had access to a national list of those let go from the company, one might be better able to “point fingers.”
Yesterday, Cub Reporter Ted checked in asking the whereabouts of Darryl Grandy at WJAS (1320; W256DE – 99.1 FM). Darryl was the “D” in the station’s recent GD Morning Show which he had been hosting with Greg Maxwell. Research shows the last time the two hour morning program aired was on October 17. Grandy has been the station’s operations manager for a number of years, but it appears all contact info for him (and other staffers) has been removed from the website. Instead “Your Morning Show” with Michael DelGiorno airs from 6:00 – 9:00 a.m. It’s described as, “With a motto of ‘so much information, so little understanding,’ DelGiorno helps the audience start their day with fun, witty and interesting conversation that’s also informative.” That seems akin to what Grandy and Maxwell were doing, more likely on a more local level

I stumbled onto \”Your Morning Show\” on WWVA-1170, as I look for WCCS-1160 to check what the Renda stations in Indiana are doing newswise (with nighttime low-power WCCS often is blown out pre-dawn also by a religious station out of Chicago). \”Morning Show\” now is on WWVA from 6 to 7 a.m., followed by Bloomdaddy (who once of course also aired on WJAS, but today is syndicated out of WWVA sibling WTAM-1100 in Cleveland). More than you may have really wanted to know, Eric, but the radio business still fascinates even when I\’m at a newspaper desk.
“Your Morning Show” is a syndicated offering that iHeart launched fairly recently–internally at first (starting in 2023), then officially through Premiere (as of about a year ago).
I hadn’t noticed that the GD Morning Show was off the air, since my schedule changed and I haven’t been listening in the mornings this season. I noticed some differences in other day parts, like Daryl reading the weather, and I’d never heard him do that before.
I’ll miss D and G, local voices from the beautiful studios in Green Tree.
Note to WJAS: Change your imaging, you’ve used the same thing through several presidential cycles now, the sound effects and whispery female voice. There’s regularly a minute of silence before the top of the hour news at night, it should happen once, so set up an e-mail alert.
Thank you.
The loss of Darryl & Greg are unfortunate, and as your other correspondents note, DelGiorno is yet another syndicated talk host. He’s also of a political bent which fits the rest of the lineup at WJAS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_DelGiorno
If WJAS isn’t saying anything, then I would suspect that the loss of the local show is a function of both saving money and a desire for a more political morning show.
Frankly, the GD Morning Show’s relative lack of strong political content was refreshing; I can get nationally syndicated political talk anywhere but I can’t get local talk. There’s no reason to listen to WJAS just to hear the same-old same-old available elsewhere.
I’m guessing I don’t agree with Jay on a whole lot else, but I am with him on this. Locally produced content, and taking a break from the politics, would both be refreshing on WJAS. Every talk station could use a “Doug Hoerth Break” in it’s lineup for lack of a better term IMO. As it is they are just parroting a bunch of content that can be streamed elsewhere.
