“Dr. Knowledge” dies

Perhaps the name Charles Reichblum doesn’t ring any bells, but most people, in particular listeners to KDKA Radio (1020; W261AX 100.1), know him as “Dr. Knowledge” a show host, contributor and author. Reichblum passed away earlier today at age 95 the station reports.

Reichblum was a lifelong Pittsburgher who, at the age of 14, introduced himself to play-by-play announcer Bob Prince who lived nearby. According to the report, Prince gave the young boy an “internship” of sorts at KDKA making sure the newswires were monitored. It was at this time a new interest of learning about facts began after a story with such material came over the wire.

Mr. Reichblum later went to Syracuse University where he was the play-by-play announcer for football and basketball games and returned to Pittsburgh where he was sports director for a station (we think it was WJAS) and started his own company offering weekly syndicated content.

Early in the 2000s, “Dr. Knowledge” began appearing on KDKA again periodically with fun facts. Eventually the station gave him Friday and Saturday overnights for a time as kind of a complement to Bob Logue’s “Undercover Club” which occupied the overnight hours during the weekdays. The “Dr. Knowledge Minute” has been airing on CBS stations all throughout the country for many years. He was also author of books under the “Knowledge in a Nutshell” theme.

Mr. Reichblum is survived by Audrey, his wife of 65 years who, when joining him on the air, was known as “Ms. Information”. Funeral arrangements are pending
