WTAE to add subchannel

March 24, 2022 Off By Eric O'Brien

According to the Trib’s Rob Owen, WTAE will start carrying Weigel Broadcasting’s Story channel to digital subchannel 4.3 beginning March 28. He describes the channel as featuring factual and historical shows drawn from A&E and History Channel programming.

Not sure what this will mean for the placement of the current 4.3. Because of WTAE’s analog 4 signal having been “short spaced” between Columbus, Ohio and Washington, D.C.’s respective channel 4s, The transmitter is located in Elizabeth Township in the southernmost corner of Allegheny County. The original digital transmission on Channel 51 started there and remains there and that is what appears as 4.1 and 4.2 (for Cozi TV) on over the air receivers. Channels 4.3 and 4.4 aired the same respective channels using a repeater transmitter on Channel 22 from WQED’s tower in Oakland since the main signal didn’t always make it beyond the city from it’s (deep) South Hills locale.

For those of you receiving your signals over the air, I would suggest rescanning the dial come Monday to make sure you’re covered!
