Longtime Butler Radio Journalist and Host Dies

Butler County’s longest tenured radio announcer has died.

Dave Malarkey began his broadcast career at Butler-based WISR Radio in 1973, serving as its longtime morning show host. He also served as news director and later took over as host of “It’s Your Turn”, which had been known as “The Larry Berg Show” for decades until Berg retired from the station in 2001.

Malarkey was well-known throughout the community by his presence at municipal meetings, political appearances and civic functions in addition to his on-air work. He also made appearances as an actor with the Butler Little Theatre and Musical Theatre Guild, where he also served as a producer and director, as well as a board member.

Ever proud of his Irish heritage, Malarkey visited his ancestral homeland 13 times to attend the Synge School of Irish Literature and Drama. He also graduated from the Pennsylvania State University, where he was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity.

Malarkey was a well-known golf enthusiast and never hesitated to raise a pint of Guiness draught, his favorite beverage.

Malarkey stepped down from WISR in February for undisclosed health reasons. He died Saturday, August 1st at the age of 78. He is survived by his partner, Marietta Carney, as well as a brother and two sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were private at Malarkey’s request. Those wishing to honor his legacy may do so by donating to St. Vincent de Paul Society of Butler.
